Chippewa Valley High School student in custody after gun found, police say

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Michigan.Chippewa Valley High School went into temporary detention based on a report that a student inside the school possessed a firearm, school officials said Friday.

Secondary school entered temporary confinement on the morning of April 1 After a parent and student reported another student had a gun on school property, Chippewa Valley Schools Superintendent Ron Roberts wrote to the community on Friday. School administrators immediately called the police and placed the school under lockdown as a precaution, officials said.

Police responded to the report and discharged the student without incident, Roberts said. The student is currently in police custody, although it is unclear if he will face charges.

“Keeping our students and staff safe is a community-wide effort. Parents, don’t forget to talk to your child about your behavioral expectations at home and at school. Remind them of school policies that prohibit weapons on school property and the serious consequences they will face if they break these rules.

Officers recovered a firearm from the school during their initial investigation. Clinton Township Police said no one was injured and no one was in danger during the lockdown. The district praises the quick-wittedness of police and parents.

The high school students were released as planned, police said.
