Lexington middle school student brings BB gun to school

LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) — A valuable teaching moment occurred after a middle school student brought a BB gun to school on Monday.

A letter was reportedly sent to parents of students attending Edythe J. Hayes Middle School in Lexington after the BB gun was brought onto school grounds.

Edythe J. Hayes principal Dave Hoskins said in the letter that the situation presents an opportunity to teach students the value of gun safety, regardless of type.

“This situation provides us with the perfect opportunity to remind our children that even toy guns are not allowed in school,” Hoskins said.

Gifford’s Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence says powderless guns — including BB, air and pellet guns — are dangerous because they can be mistaken for real firearms, which can lead to confusion for law enforcement and, in some cases, lead to tragic results.

Principal Hoskins said appropriate disciplinary action would be taken.
