No credible threat determined at Sierra Vista Junior High, student’s vape pen mistaken for gun

An alleged report of a student with a gun at Sierra Vista High School sparked an investigation Tuesday, but no credible threat was determined after the suspicious weapon turned out to be a vape pen.

At around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, deputies received reports that a student was in possession of a gun at Sierra Vista Junior High School in the 19400 block of Stillmore Street in Canyon Country, according to spokeswoman Natalie Arriaga. of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

“School administrators received a Text-A-Tip from a student who may have a gun in his backpack,” Arriaga said. “The student was immediately detained by school administrators and law enforcement was called in.”

When deputies arrived at the scene, a brief struggle ensued as the suspect was detained, but a deputy was later able to detain the student without incident.

As a precaution, medical personnel arrived on the scene to ensure that all parties involved received a proper medical evaluation, Arriaga said.

A search of the student’s property was conducted and it was determined that no firearms were present at the premises.

“I give credit to whoever reported this because again the tipping system works,” said Dave Caldwell, spokesman for the William S. Hart Union High School School District. “We’re glad it’s nothing serious.”

Deputies are currently continuing their investigation at Sierra Vista Junior High beginning Tuesday morning.

At the moment, the investigation is still ongoing. Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station at 661-260-4000. Anonymous tips may be submitted by calling “LA Crime Stoppers” at 800-222-TIPS, or by visiting http://LACrimeStoppers.org.
