Tallahassee high school student charged with having marijuana and loaded gun at school

A student at Godby High School was arrested on Friday after the smell of marijuana led to the discovery of drugs and a loaded gun.

A worried teacher took the 15-year-old student to an administrator’s office. The Leon County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) said a search of the student’s backpack revealed a plastic bag containing approximately 12 grams of marijuana.

School officials also discovered a loaded 9mm handgun in the backpack.

A news release from the sheriff’s office says the school resource assistant has been notified and has taken the minor into custody. An investigation determined that the teenager purchased the weapon from an unknown source and that there was no intentional violence against other students or school staff.

The teenager was taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center. He is charged with possession of a firearm on school property and possession of cannabis.

As part of his ceasefire initiativeLCSO and Big Bend Crime Stoppers have teamed up to offer a $1,000 reward leading to the arrest of an individual who illegally possesses a firearm.

To report a tip anonymously, call 850-574-TIPS (8477). Callers will receive a tip code that can be checked for updates on the case. If an arrest is made, a redemption code will be sent along with where the reward can be collected.

The LCSO says students, staff and parents are urged to contact their School Resource Assistant and school officials directly to report concerns, or they can use the FortifyFL App.
