Elementary student arrested for assaulting teacher

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCBD) – A student at a North Charleston school was arrested Thursday after allegedly assaulting a staff member.

According to the North Charleston Police Department (NCPD), officers responded to Liberty Hill Academy shortly after 10:00 a.m. when school administrators requested assistance.

Liberty Hill Academy is a K-12 behavioral school that provides a structured environment for students in the Charleston County School District.

Administrators told police that two students were trying to inappropriately enter the building without checking in, and a third student let them in.

At one point a fight broke out and one of the students “kicked [the victim] in the face with a clenched fist. The victim fell to the ground, “where [the student] continued to attack him by kicking him in the ribs. Witnesses confirmed the details and the victim “had a small bruise under his left eye from the assault”.

The student’s guardian was called to the school and took custody of the student.

The student faces two charges of third-degree assault and the matter is expected to be dealt with in family court.

The Charleston County School District provided the following statement:

A Liberty Hill Academy staff member was assaulted by a student while breaking up a fight at Liberty Hill Academy yesterday. Law enforcement is involved and we are following district policies to deal with the situation.
